Ultimately, there’s nothing wrong with getting braces as an adult. (You’re never too old to enjoy the perks of a straight smile!) Still, doing so does mean you’ll be wearing braces to work. That situation can present unique challenges if you aren’t prepared. Fortunately, though, it’s easy enough to get yourself ready. In fact, your DeSoto orthodontist can even show you how. To that end, here are four helpful tips to help you manage braces while operating in the workplace.
Bring a Braces Care Kit
Whether on the job or not, you must give braces proper care. It’s thus a good idea to bring a “braces care kit” to work with you. This tool collection will keep your mouth healthy even as you make a living.
There are several items you ought to include in a braces care kit. These include the following:
- A soft-bristled toothbrush
- Fluoridated toothpaste
- Travel-size mouthwash
- Dental floss
- Orthodontic wax
- Over-the-counter pain relievers
Keep a Water Bottle Handy
Drinking plenty of water is always good for your overall health. That said, the practice is even more important when you wear braces. So, have a bottle of water handy during your work days.
Remember, braces tend to trap food particles. These “leftovers” can cause tooth decay and bad breath if left alone. Thankfully, drinking water can rinse these food bits and keep you from reaching for sugary drinks. You can just rely on H₂O instead of breakroom coffee.
Practice Mindful Eating
For a few days after getting braces, your mouth is likely to be sore. You’d be wise to eat meals mindfully while at work during this time. In particular, stick to softer items – pasta, soft veggies, yogurt, etc.
There are a few ways to go about this mindfulness. One option, of course, is to bring lunch from home. This approach gives you more control over what you eat. If that’s not possible, you can always find a lunch location serving appropriate food.
Remember to Smile Confidently
People associate braces with kids and teens, so you may feel awkward about having them. Regardless, try to smile confidently around your coworkers.
True, your smile isn’t perfect yet. Even so, that’s no reason to hide your pearly whites. You should be proud – you’re making a positive change and bettering yourself. To ensure you don’t feel any shame, then, remember to show off your teeth at times.
Wearing braces to work will feel unfamiliar at first. With the tips above, however, you’ll adjust and be just fine!
