You probably know a bit about Invisalign, even if you haven’t received it. They’re an orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth with clear aligning trays. After wearing them for a year or so, they’ll give you a straight smile pleasing to the eye. However, have you wondered if Invisalign can fix bite problems as well? Your local DeSoto dentist can answer that question.
Here’s a summary of what Invisalign aligners can do regarding your bite. Read it over so you’ll have a fuller understanding of their abilities.
So, Can Invisalign Fix Bite Issues?
If appropriately designed by an experienced clinician, Invisalign trays can fix overbites and many other bite conditions. However, the relative difficulty of treatment will depend on the patient’s circumstances.
Some bite problems are a “slam dunk” and simply fixed with Invisalign or braces. For instance, a “healthy bite” with only minor crowding or spacing is the easiest to treat. Patients in this scenario should expect to be treated relatively quickly and get fantastic results.
More advanced issues usually take longer to treat. These include overbites, open bites, underbites, and crossbites.
How Invisalign Overbite Correction Works
Overbites are one of the most common bite problems among dental patients. How they’re fixed will depend primarily on patient age, though overbite severity and treatment response are also considered.
Young Patients (12 and younger)
Overbites in this category can be corrected with an “Invisalign Mandibular Advancement,” a tool that redirects a patient’s growth to fix their bite. The process involves placing plastic wings on the aligners to help a child shift their lower jaw forward in small, persistent increments. In doing so, it straightens teeth and aligns the jaw.
Teenage or Adult Patients (12-13 and older)
Patients over thirteen can’t rely on the mandibular advancement appliance to correct their overbite. Instead, they might wear elastics that gradually move the bottom teeth forward while moving the top teeth back, thereby solving the trouble.
On the other hand, patients with severe overbites may need an added “motion” appliance to correct the issue. Said appliance would be a small bar placed on the upper teeth to reduce the overbite and straighten the lower arch.
How Invisalign Corrects Other Bite Issues
As previously said, Invisalign can fix open bites, underbites, and crossbites.
For these latter problems, elastics and other appliances may be necessary. A dentist will evaluate your unique case to prescribe the best-customized procedure.
